GST Registration Checklist for a New Business
GST registration checklist for new businesses, covering entity information, promoters, authorised signatory, place of business and supporting documents.
Discuss your requirementPrepare a registration application around the actual business, not a standard list copied from another entity. The first review should establish what is supplied, where operations take place and which registration route may apply.
Document the business facts first
Describe the products or services, customer locations, supply channels and places of operation. Note any marketplace activity, interstate transactions or existing registrations. Turnover is relevant, but should not be treated as the only fact that determines registration.
Make the entity and signatory records consistent
Organise the PAN, constitution documents and promoter or authorised signatory details relevant to the entity. Compare names, addresses and contact information across records. Explain discrepancies rather than altering a supporting document to make it match an application.
Explain the place of business
Identify whether the premises are owned, rented, shared or used with consent, and collect evidence appropriate to that arrangement. A lease, utility record, ownership evidence and consent document serve different purposes. Check that the application describes the actual occupation and activity.
Illustrative issue: the utility record is in the property owner’s name while the applicant operates under a rental agreement. Review the documents together and establish what additional evidence is needed; do not assume the mismatch alone decides the application.
Run a pre-submission check
- Confirm the correct entity and proposed registration locations.
- Check business activity and signatory information against records.
- Ensure supporting scans are complete, current where required and readable.
- Check that premises evidence explains the actual arrangement.
- Record who will review and authorise the application and handle queries.
Plan the work after registration
Registration is not the end of the process. Establish invoicing, sales and purchase records, return responsibilities and reconciliation arrangements. Keep the application, acknowledgements and any queries together. Approval timing and additional verification depend on the authority’s process; a checklist does not guarantee approval.
Important: This guide is general preparation information, not a conclusion about your eligibility, tax treatment or filing obligations. Requirements must be checked for the entity, facts and relevant period.
